Certificate Program Course Curriculum

Courses listed below are included in the curriculum of all certificate programs, unless otherwise stated. 

Single course options are available; enrollment required. 

OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY

This course is a basic overview of the Old Testament aimed to acquaint the student with the content, message, and personal application of each book, and to study the unity of all the books in the process of revelation and redemption.

NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY

This course is an overview of the four Gospels portraying the life of Christ. The book of Acts is used as a historical framework for study of the earlier New Testament letters and as introduction to its later letters and to its climax. Application of the New Testament’s teachings to our individual and corporate lives as believers is maintained throughout.

CEREMONY & ORDINANCE PERFORMANCE

This course examines the various ceremonies and ordinances of the Church Of God In Christ. Considerations will be given to issues that confront those involved in carrying out these ceremonies and ordinances with a reverent and worshipful attitude. Particular focus will be given to overseeing the performance of the ceremonies and ordinances, such as baptism, communion, feet washing, weddings, dedications, and funerals.

COGIC HISTORY & POLITY

This course examines the life, works, and theology of Bishop Charles Harrison Mason. It also explores the origins and ministry of the Church of God in Christ up to the current year. This course also explains the structure for governing the church and how each entity of the church from the General Assembly to the Local Church functions to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the church.

COGIC DOCTRINE

This course discusses the theological and Biblical basis of COGIC doctrine and practice. It will demonstrate why certain doctrines and practices are central to the organization.

CHURCH ADMINISTRATION

This course is a basic overview to highlight the principles of church administration. The aim is to acquaint the student with the art, science, and gift of administration and helps. It is also an attempt to share the challenges that many leaders will face as they minister to the people of God.

WOMEN IN MINISTRY

This course examines the roles that women have played in the history and ministry of the Church Of God In Christ. It will also examine the lives of some of the key female leaders in the church and study the structure of the Women’s Department.

LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES

This course examines the essence of what characterizes a leader, as well as how a leader influences the development of future leaders. Students will learn the importance of developing their leadership styles and of helping develop future leaders.

EFFECTIVE STEWARDSHIP

This course will examine the practical theology of stewardship that connects it to the visible manifestation of the comprehensive rule of God over every aspect of life.

PASTORAL CARE & COUNSELING

Students will learn techniques and theories for effective interpersonal and group counseling.

HOMILETICS & SERMON PREPARATION

Students will learn to examine techniques, principles, and standard practices in the delivery of sermons. Students will practice delivering sermons.
